Overview

We live in a world that is becoming increasingly aware of the urgent need to be more prudent with our raw materials. The craftsmen at Robert Thompsons are part of many great craft traditions that seek to truly understand the living nature of the materials that they craft with to produce work that endures and enriches with age.

It is important to consider that every oak tree is unique and our island weather gives the English oak its character. Two pieces of oak will never be the same and understanding how to air dry the timber and match the wood so all elements of the construction are able to move in harmony is a vital part of the craft knowledge which is then passed down from master to apprentice.

To own a unique piece of Mouseman furniture is to own this tradition.

Behind the process of naturally air-dried English oak is a constant communication with estates throughout the country that embrace sustainable forestry. The collaboration with saw mills that understand the exact method of preparing the timber for air drying is an essential part of how the wood grain looks in the finished item.

“English oak is part of the fabric of our island history. We are simply guardians for the next generation.”

The Oak logs (Butts) are converted into boards then laid down and allowed to dry for several years. The ends are painted to prevent moister getting into the end grain. This magnificent burr oak will find its way into many pieces as a feature.

Our skilled custodians of the timber yard will select boards that can be converted into the elements needed to produce a given design. The workshop will then craft and produce to the same standards set out by Robert Thompson in the 1900’s.
